Dr James Bedford

About
James Bedford is an educator and writer based at UNSW College. His work centers on the thoughtful integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning. With a background in creative writing and course design, he brings a unique blend of creativity and pedagogical insight to his research. Much of his writing explores how AI-driven tools—like large language models—can serve as scaffolds to support student learning, especially disadvantaged students, or those facing uncertainty about academic expectations.

James advocates for a balanced approach to AI in education: leveraging its potential to simplify research tasks, provide on-demand feedback, and foster personalised learning opportunities, yet he is also adamant about maintaining the essential human elements of creativity, critical thinking, and authentic expression. His publications and talks often highlight the importance of responsible, evidence-based AI use, pointing out both the technology’s promise and the risks of over-reliance. Whether he’s guiding faculty on classroom strategies or helping students navigate their first encounters with AI, James remains committed to a central principle: AI should serve as a tool that enhances learning outcomes—never replacing the personal and transformative power of human-centered education.

He is also the co-founder of No AI December a global initiative that encourages the world to take a break from AI tools for one month of the year.
